View Full Version : Live rock blues

I have purchased Fiji Live Rock from an online supplier, Marine Depot.
I placed my order Thursday morning, 10-9 for overnight shipment. After
tracking the shipment, I discovered that it will not be delivered until
Monday 10-13.
The suppliers return policy page is rather ambiguous (no specific
explanation) in it's description of live rock returns. I know I should have
done my research, and asked the right questions up front.
Naturally, I am concerned that my live rock will be in miserable condition
when it arrives. It will be 96 hours packaged and/or in route, at best, when
it arrives. An afternoon delivery could push it to 100+ hours.
Has anyone had experience with this supplier for returnso or anything?
Already I'm tweaked that they didn't at least designate a Saturday delivery,
or recommend waiting until Monday to prevent an unavoidable delay that could
severely impact the quality of the rock. Being a new tank, I want to
maximize my start-up for a good Biological filter. I don't want to put in
rock that has experienced dramatic die-off (or is ruined) that would
minimize it's chance for good recovery, due to this long delay in shipping.
Any experiential advice about the supplier, or info about what condition I
can expect the rock to be in, is appreciated and desired. I'm a newbie and
welcome valuable input.
If it looks bleak, I'll ditch the rock altogether, and try to negotiate some
sort a refund or credit.
Thanx in advance,
mark

give marine depot a call first thing monday, they might suggest that you
refuse delivery and then they can reship and give you the OVERNIGHT service
that you paid for.

You could refuse to accept it, and have Marine Depot send you a fresh order.
I'd call them first thing Monday morning to state your intentions and your
fears.
LR is pretty expensive stuff, and if you ordered it Thursday asking for
overnight shipping, it should have arrived Friday imho! (in my humble opinion)

As mentioned, simply call them Monday morning. I purchased rock from them &
the quality was very good ( better than the other commercial outlet i got
rock from). They cure their own rock, so i am sure they can take it back &
cure it again. They are easy going people to deal with. Ask for Jose. He is
very cool with these type of things. Luckily, I am close enough to pick my
rock up :). Hang in there.

Thanx for the replies and suggestions.
I will call Monday and try to work it out. Delivery will likely occur before
they open (eastern time here).
We will decline the delivery. A recent phone call to Fed-ex revealed that
such a delay can result in Fed-ex satisfying a claim for an expired
livestock shipment. Marine depot's site says delivery must be accepted, even
if late. Under these circumstances we feel justified to decline, but hope
that it can be worked. This being our first experience with them, we hope
their policy doesn't leave us high and dry. Thanx again to all responses.
We'll post a follow up of our experience.
Bests,
Mark and Adrianne

We received shipment today.
The box was badly damaged and rocks were literally falling out.
Marine Depot agreed to ship a new order at no charge.
Big thumbs up to them. Big thanx to Robert, the naturalist in customer
service.
Done :-)

Wow, if they going to ship another shipment w/o charge, you would then have
two shipment?

The rock was in pretty bad shape (much of it dry and broken like it went
through a washing machine- a good 2-3 pounds of broken off pieces and gravel
in the bottom of the box (busted foam packing) not to mention what's still
on the floor of the Fedex truck).
You'd have to see the photos!
Marine Depot Live promised to ship yesterday after they got the pictures.
I sent 3 different e-mails of pictures. I called today and they said they
didn't get the pictures, but they would ship today after I promised to send
them again, this time, to the salesperson's address.
We don't blame them for wanting photos, but it hasn't reshipped yet.
Naturally, we put the rock in water but we won't use it in our tank. We want
a good shipment as promised that will have good recovery. We'll likely give
this away to a new tank for base to help someone with limited funds (this
stuff ain't cheap) start their tank (We live in the DC area- hint). Everyone
benefits and Marine depot Live gets to shine. Hopefully! BTW, They did ship
for Saturday delivery. Fedex dropped the ball big-time on this one.
We're just honest folks and newbie's, who want to get off to a good start,
so that one day we can have a nice tank, good experiences with the vendors,
and pictures to share with the group. That's all.

Got the e-mail from Marine Depot Live and new Fedex tracking # for reship.
We are happy with the outcome and will buy from them in the future.
