I am starting my first marine tank and and I plan on cycling it with live
rock and clean up crew. At the advice of a people on this list I threw in a
couple raw dead shrimp from the grocery store. I have a hang on the back
filter and a power head going and the temp and salinity is stable. I now
have a lot of brown algea growing on the sand and (carib) and the walls.
My question is should I stay on the same track I am on now and add some live
rock and clean up? AND what type of clean up crew should I add first.

Yes, you can add your LR and a clean up crew now.
Ummm. Please do this first though: Check your tank for Ammonia and Nitrites.
If either are over 0, you better hold off on the clean up crew.
Better yet, post your results here. I'd rather not steer you the wrong way
prematurely. :)

Now is a good time to add your live rock so it can cure as you cycle the
tank. I agree with Marc... I would also wait until your ammonia and
nitrites are zero, and the nitrates are low before adding the inverts.
Inverts are sensitive to high levels of nitrates.
Turbo snails (I have a big one in my little nano, and he goes to town on all
the algae!)
Astrea snails
Nassarius snails
Hermit crabs
Sandsifting crab
Sandsifting star
Emerald crab (he may be a risk to corals if you plan to have them, but if
you're doing fish only he's a good algae eater and very cute)
Check out the cleanup crew package from ipsf.com.
