Today I say a heater that is use with a canister filter. The water runs
through the heater and is heated as it returns to the tank. Does anybody
have any experience with this type of heater.

I don't have personal experience, but a member of another forum tried one
when they first came out and he wasn't impressed with it. It is also very
possible, however, that his problems were an issue of user error.. :o)
IIRC, he was having a problem fitting the line onto the ends of the heater.
But when I recently looked at them they had different sizes.

The hydor brand of that type of heater has a good review or 2 in this
newsgroup. They are especially useful in preventing big fish from banging
into a glass heater and breaking it.

I've got both the 200 and the 300 watt models. I never need to worry
about the need for water flow to go around them in my heavily planted
aquariums as they're external. They keep the temperature extremely
stable. Basically, it's setup and forget. The best heaters I've ever had
really.

I have one 300W model in use for a short time. It has an electronic controller
with a calibrated dial and is accurate. I like everything about the heater and
would use one again. Hopefully it will prove to be reliable too.
Hi. I've been interested in the heaters, but have a slight problem...
my eheim 2215 has tubing with an ID of 12mm, which means I need the
model with 1/2" ends, I think. But I really should have the 300W
heater, since I have a 55 gallon tank with warm water fish (Discus,
etc.), and I think the 300W only comes with 5/8" ends. Any
suggestions?

Stop by your local hardware store and purchase some adapter fittings.
There are adapters for damn near anything, you can hook a platypus to
a crocodile if you want......

The smaller Eheim tubing marked 12/16mm is quite flexible and can be stretched
over the larger fittings. Just dip 1" of the end of the tubing in hot water for 10
seconds and you will be able to slip it on 5/8" barbs without much effort.
BTW, a 200W heater is enough for a 55G tank if it is in a normally heated room.

I too have the Hydor 200W model. I have been using it for about a year
now.... never a problem. No leaks, good stable temps.
