Last Friday, I just purchased 2 yellow lab and 2 demasoni african cichlids
for a 20 gallon tank. i fed them twice now and they don't go up to the top
to eat the food. If they are eating, its not when i'm watching. Should i
be worried?

No worries. They'll eat before they starve :) Make sure you are not
overfeeding them.

Good, i feel better! I feed them a small pinch of flakes every other day,
but like i said, i just got them so i only fed them twice. THey just seemed
very disinterested in food.

Well, anything is possible I guess. Including something wrong with them. But
the odds are that they are just not yet accustomed to their new
surroundings. I'm sure if they get hungry enough their primal instincts will
take over :)

You might ask LFS what they were feeding. Sometimes fish are reluctant
to take a new food.

Mbuna's such as you have are almost exclusively vegetarian - I feed mine
Spirulina sticks but also supplement with some brine shrimp....check out:-

This will give you the specific diet requirements for your fish. I was
always advised to avoid standard "flake" for these fish although I am sure
some do very well on it.
