i have in my tank a black phantom tetra and a red one 2 platys and 2
glowlight tetras i only have a few fish as it is a new tank still
trying to cylcle. but when i do my weekly change my black phantom seems
to go a little mad and starts chasing the other phantom but recently it
has started picking on my younger platys and they are hiding and i
barely see them but these are my favourite fish in the tank and i dont
want them getting hurt and i only have 1 tank so i cant take the
agressive one out for him to calm down. the water does seem to be
warmer than usual i am thinking possibly he is trying to mate with the
other phantom and the platys are interfeiring am i right about this
and if not please can someone tell me how to calm him down

Many tetras such as Black Phantoms can get aggressive when they are alone
in a tank (or in small numbers). They are shoaling fish, so having more
*might* help (if your tank is large enough). Warmer water will also
increase their metabolism and aggression levels. The fighting might just
be pecking order (to establish who is the boss, and sometimes chase off
the loser so there is less competition should a female wander by).

Also many, perhaps most, tetras, including normally extremely peaceful
ones like neons, will fight and/or defend territory during breeding.

All schooling fish push the weak to the outside to be sacrificed.

I saw a neon (alpha male?) diving head-first into the top of the head of
another neon repeatedly till the second neon was dead (15-20 times).

Tetras are in the same fish family as Piranha (Characins). ( 8(|)
