View Full Version : Anyone seen a Clown Loach with spots instead of the second stripe

Saw this amazingly pretty Clown Loach at the LFS today....instead of a
stripe or saddleback he had 3 distinctive spots - I watched him for a good
10 mins.....My previous :-( Alpha was a saddleback with a spot underneath
and I also now have another saddleback with my new three but I have never
seen one quite like this.
Guy at LFS was prepared to try and catch it for me but I held back - it was
around 3" long....now I'm regretting it.
Is this type of marking rare? and if so should I bite the bullet and go back
tomorrow and get it? There is no sign of any disease or Ich in their tanks
at the moment....

He's rare, for sure. You might grab him if you've got room. I saw a
lot of tanks of loaches in the couple of years I worked at a fish store,
and I saw saddlebacks but I don't remember any with 3 spots. I'll be
curious how often NetMax has seen them.

Guess who is heading right back to the LFS in the morning....I thought he
was rare but was trying to be sensible. There certainly is the room as I'm
on a replacement programme - plus my son has a near empty 30gall tank
upstairs....
The only problem will be how much he will get stressed when they attempt to
net him....

Spots instead of stripes is something I've never seen. Strangest I've
noticed is incomplete stripes with or without a spot, or the beginnings
of a 4th stripe or spot. I've read that these tend to be regional
variations, but Clowns tend to be quite uniform, so this spotted fellow
(if a true Clown) might have travelled quite a bit down the Mekong before
getting caught. Calm two-net catching will not stress the fish unduly.
I hope you can get him (I'm sure you'll let us know ;~).

He is in with their latest batch of Clowns....have watched them for a week
so I'm hoping they are clear of disease - plus the guy in the shop told me
that this is the healthiest batch they've had for a while - I believe him as
I've seen a lot of Ich there in the past.
Heading off in the morning to see if I can get him....will get some
companions at the same time if the QT nitrites haven't settled
Will update tomorrow

This guy does sound intriguing. Do you think you could manage a photo?

I wonder what its "growth" potential will be? Ever since I got my
Clowns over 2 years ago, I have been worried about what I would do if
they did grow to some of the sizes mentioned in this group. So far,
all has worked out well, instead I now worry about my SAEs. They have
outgrown the Clowns an average of an inch longer already.
Another factor I never considered when I bought my fish is how long
they live, 20 years is a long time.

Went back this morning and couldn't find him again :-(....but they did have
quite a lot with very odd markings - so acquired another three. One has a
stripe on one side and then a spot on the other side, which isn't quite the
same thing I know, but he is very pretty nonetheless. One of the others is a
saddleback and the other one is in hiding at the moment so can't describe it
fully
I wish I had bought it when I saw it but I really needed to know I had
somewhere safe to put it when I got home and with the QT tank still showing
0.1 nitrite I really didn't think I could risk putting him in there...
Happy with my purchases though (slap wrist as I put them straight into the
Community tank) - one of them certainly seems very confident (the
saddleback - around 3" long at the moment)

I'm coaxing my 3 with hand feedings.
I did this the last time I had Clowns (they were carrying internal
parasites and wasted away), and they quickly tamed.
Those ended up being so tame towards me that instead of hiding when I
was peeping into the tank, they were in my face wiggling back and forth
begging for food and attention.
I start out using a liquid medicine dropper (get at the local
pharmacy). They're larger than an eye dropper and Ilove them for
feeding frozen foods. Also, by using one of these I can make
absolutely sure that my African Dwarf Frogs are getting enough
Bloodworms and aren't going to starve, any shy fish end up with big fat
bellies full of food instead of the Angelfish and Bettas (resident male
and several females) getting everything.
It also comes in so handy when I need to feed the other tanks around
the house. I have a little plastic container that I thaw the worms in
using a little tank water. I just squirt some worms into each tank
(Male Bettas in either 1g's or 2's or 3g's) without even touching the
water. That's good for not cross contaminating when disease or
prasasites are present in one of the quarantine tanks.
I held a cube of frozen beefheart yesterday right by the log where the
Clowns like to hang out. They sure liked that. I'll only feed the
beefheart occasionally because it so messy. Even with Angels in the
tank, before the Clowns I was always cleaning out uneaten beefheart.
Last night....not one tid bit left. = ) Yea!
