View Full Version : Move fish to a larger tank.
Hi,
My Red Cap Oranda has outgrown his surroundings and I need to move him
to another tank. He is a really nice fish and I don't like the idea of
going through a tank cycle with him so was wondering the best way to go
about things.
I was planning on running the tanks side be side until the new one
reached levels suitable for introducing the Red Cap. Would it be best
to start the tank from fresh and cycle the tank using a new fish I'm
not so attached to or should I use water from the original aquarium
taken during normal water changes to get a jump start on the cycling
process?
Any help would be appreciated so I can avoid casualties.
Cheers,
Ross.

take some filter media from the current tank and use it in the new
one.

No, don't start fresh. -- You already have more than half the work done!
- Place fish into a bucket of TANK water and add an airstone while you
work. (If you leave the fish in his old tank, you might have a disease
outbreak!)
- Set up your new tank.
- Put about 50% of the water from old tank into new tank - or use all of
it if you are going to a much larger tank.
- Place some of the old gravel into the new tank.
- Place old filter (don't change any media yet, just rinse it out) and
get it going on the new tank as soon as water level is high enough.
- Top off tank with aged (preferred) or dechlored water -- watch
temperature!
- Set up NEW filter and start it up. (You will have 2 filters working
on the tank.)
- Place fish into new set up.
- Add STABILITY (Seachem) to the water to help reseed the aquarium with
good bacteria colonies.
Your're done. Test once or twice a day. The tank should clear almost
immediately (a few hours).
For best results, keep using Stability for 7 days.
Good luck,
nan
Thanks for the advice, I hadn't even thought about reusing some or even
all of the gravel. I much prefer that idea over running both tanks side
by side I don't really have the room, but I'll probably keep it so I
can use it for quarantine just in case.
Cheers.
