I thought about getting some to put into an outdoor tub and let them
make more. I went to the sort of good LFS we have here, all they had
were males. Seems odd that someone would go to the trouble to sort
them out.

At least I believe I can tell males from females, males have the white
tips on the fins.

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, that has happened before.

Males have white tips on the fins & are slender. Females have white tips on
their fins ans are plumper.
This is as adults. Juveniles look similar.

I'll have to go back and check them out again. Somewhere I read that
females did not have the white tips.

Did the LFS say that all they had were males, or did you infer this just from
your observation?

The fin tips are yellow on most of the WCs I've seen, and both the males and
females have these tips. The contrast between the red and yellow is sharper
in the males, but it's still there on the females. The males have
proportionally larger fins too. Females are bigger and have a curvier body.

Perhaps the LFS guys could help you out here.

Males are slim and females have a deeply curved belly, like a capital "D"
lying curved side down. Buy ten, you'll get a mix, I promise! When they're
juvenile the difference is really not at all pronounced. Stick a bunch of
hornwort in there to give them something to spawn on. They tend to spawn in
the spring.
