I finally got my carbonate hardness up to about 14 dkh and I am very pleased
with Elaine's recommendation of using baking soda (not baking powder) (I
used pure baking soda by arm and hammer and have a good supply of it) to
raise it. I used the baking soda aggressively and I now just want to
maintain the dkh to where it is so my bedroom tank's ph remains stable (by
the way everyone - I searched www.thatpetplace.com 's website and found a
variety of strengths of seachem's stability there) and I believe that tank's
ph is between 7.5-8.0 which is optimal for the inhabitants. I am going to
try egeria densa in this tank for the millionth time and hope it really
takes off in it since it is regarded to be a weed and almost a pest in the
same way hornwort is considered a pest so I am pretty jazzed and impressed.
I did a search on google groups for information on using baking soda to
raise the dkh and found some interesting facts (i.e. use 1/4 a teaspoon per
10 gallons to gradually raise and I think maintain kh), and I think that
google groups is one of the only places you can do that (i.e. search the
newsgroup's entire database at one time unlike common newsreaders such as
what I almost always use - outlook express) so everyone keep it in mind when
doing searches through newsgroups. I don't have any questions right now -
just wanted to share with you all what I have learned and to share the
little 2 cent tips I have discovered as well. Good luck all, later!
