A few refugium questions.

Hi folks,

I have a 29 gallon tank with a sump I made from a 20 gal long tank. I
have about 8 gallons worth devoted to a refugium with live sand, some LR
rubble, and some caulerpa. One thing I didn't plan for is bits of plant
matter coming loose, and while I can just put the sponge attachment on
the Mag pump, I was hoping to leave it off so that 'pods and such might
get sent up to the display tank. Can pods pass through the sponge? What
other arrangements are used to filter out such debris?


On a related note, I have some type of red macroalgae growing out of my
LR. I moved this rock from a 55 gal fowlr I have, and never saw any sign
of it, but in this new environment, it seems to be enjoying itself. It
has long flat leaves that are beginning to branch out as it grows. Is
this a good or bad thing? Sure is pretty.

I also have that red algae stuff - grows well with a furn like thing on one
of my rocks. As long as it doesn't get completely out of hand I can not see
any harm in leaving it?

Are you constantly getting bits of matter in your display? I had this
problem too, but only if I moved things around in the refugium. Once it
settled it would be ok. Not sure about the red stuff.

It seems that as you say, it just needed to settle a bit. These appear to
be just bits that came loose in the process of transporting.

Try putting some eggcrate between your refugium and the return section
to keep the plants in its own area.

The red stuff - not sure what you are dealing with yet. Does it look
like pink cotton candy? Or is it smoother like Cyano bacteria?
