View Full Version : how much Instant Ocean

Hello,
I just got my tank and am mixing my first batch of salt water. How much
Instant Ocean do you put for 46G? I put 10 cups and the readings are ~1.024.
I read posts of people putting 1 cup/gallon. Should I wait for the salt to
"dissolve more"?
Thanks

It takes half a cup of salt per gallon, basically. 10 cups would equal 20
gallons worth of water, ime.

Same here. For 6.5 gallon buckets of water (I use old Instant Ocean buckets for that)
I mix about 3 cups of salt or little more to get 1.025 at 80F.

must be different from region to region. in the 6.5 gallon IO bucket (with
just 6 gallon of RO/DI) if i add 3 cups i get about 1.021-1.023 and end up
adding about another 1/2 cup.

I agree. Using 1/2 cup per gallon yeilds a salinity that is too low (near
1.021) .

Not here in the middle of Pennsylvania. I get a salinity over the top
of the measuring device if I follow directions on the bucket of Instant
Ocean. I have to dilute it by 1/3. The water, which I buy, is treated
(R/O and uv) by a local supermarket, using the very lime rich local
water, I assume. I have no green or red algae. I had some around the
inlets of the pumps that mysteriously disappeared one night without any
interference from me.

It is possible that my cups are a little overmeasured...
I do not try to make the salnity by cups but rather use hygrometer.

I would hope everyone is using a measuring device (refractometer, swing arm,
etc..) to test salinity rather then just a measurement of how much salt. the
1/2 cup/gallon is a great starting point IME/IMO. it gets you well in the
ball park and for a FO might be right on target.

Exactly this was my understanding. I prefer to have it less salnity
with the cups count than to have too much salt. It is always easier
to add a little salt than to add some water - a bucket has a constant
volume and with no magic you will not add water if you overdose salt :-)

thats another reason i only put 6 gallon in the IO
bucket................gives a little margin of error for to much salt.

Here in central Illinois I add 1/2 cup (cooking type measuring cup). I get
a perfect 1.026. I do however test it before adding it to the tank. From
my limited knowledge I understand that sal****er critters won't stand for to
many oooopppppssss. To clarify I add 1 1/2 cups to a 3 gallon bucket plus
calcium (when needed) and water treatment.
