View Full Version : Moving from reef to fish only.....

Hi
I've kept marines for a number of years, but unfortunately, despite initial
success, I've started to have a number of problems.
For a number of reasons, I've now decided to go fish only...
Can anyone recommend some products for removing the Aptasias that I'm
overrun with in my tank and sump.
Also, are there any products that I can use to reduce the quick build-up of
algae on the tank glass, and rocks??
Thanks
Paul

Ive had good luck with Joe's Juice. You can also get a small gauge
hypodermic needle and inject them with BOILING water or concentrated
kalkwasser (pickling lime). Be careful with the kalk and not use to
much as it can upset water parameters. Joe's is relatively expensive,
but worth it.

yep Joe's juice worked for me. I tried the boiling water in a syringe and
kalk but only temporarily. I was a bit reluctant at first but it worked
first time. you only need to inject around the mouth when its feeding and
its dead.

If you're going fish only, how about copper?
(Prepares to be run out of town on a rail.)

Paul,
as far as products to remove algae from the glass - algae scrubber and
good protein skimmer :)
For aptaisia control I used Joe's Juse(to kill big ones) + 3
peppermint shrimp. After 2 months I hardly see any aptaisia in my tank
anymore.
For fish only tank you can use copper-banded butterfly fish (haven't
tried myself...), but they tend to be on the delicate side, and since
you are having algae issues, I'd be cautious.
I've heard that people had success with a nudibranch, but I can't
remember which species.
I don't think it is possible to eliminate all aptaisia, but in my case
it is kept in check.
Best wishes
Yuri

Bergia verruncornis (or something very close to that) is the nudibranch
that eats aiptasia, but the ones I bought disappeared and were never
seen again. Very strange.

Joes juice works well but will spin off new Aptasias Make sure you
pick up a pair of pepermint shrimp to finish the job.

Can quarantining corals prevent Aptasias from getting into a tank in the
first place?

Yes, with a watchful eye. As soon as you see one, even a tiny one, act
immediately to kill / remove it.

Hmmm - anyone got a picture of an Aptasia? I have looked all over and cant
find any.
I suspect I have 1 but have had it for about a year now and it has not
spread. Is it neccesarily bad?

If you'll go to my ID page, click on "Page 2" and scroll down to the
