Rock Filter Basket

I am planning on adding a 2nd barrel for a cascade setup :)


I decided just to use the default sponge as the inlet filter for now,
would I get better filtration if I run the outlet hose into a mesh
basket of rocks or gravel? (in the top barrel)

What kind of rocks or gravel should I use in the basket? Or some kind
of carbon?

Does stainless steel clamp leech toxic submerged under water because
the screw is usually just chromium or zinc plated?

Consider using something other then pea gravel or lava rocks. Although they
work well for many people, they are heavy and difficult to clean. Many in
this newsgroup have used buffer pads from floor polishing machines, which
you can get any janitorial supply store, or window screen and sun screen
material.

I bought a bag of green scouring pads, from a janitorial supply store and
some sun screen material as the substrate for my biofilter. Convient thing
about this, is all i have to do is pick it out of the drum, spread it out on
the lawn, hose it off, and i'm done. Shoveling pea gravel or lava rocks out
of a filter quickly becomes hard work.

Probably not, i have a hose clamp at the bottom of my pond, it's been there
for years with out a problem.

Screen is so very easy to manage! or strapping tape. Our problem with
screen was clogging by muck. How big is your barrel? Plastic scrubbers
for a 55 gal barrel can be costly.
