Just curious if anyone knows of a source for realistic-looking
artificial fish that could be used while waiting to set up a tank for
real fish.

You can get little novelty tanks with neutral bouyancy plastic fish in
them that are moved around using magnets in the back / base. They are
about 30mm long, brightly coloured and their tail fins move ..;-)
I wonder if they would happily circulate of you had a pump going etc?
You could always put the toy fish back in their tank when you are
finished and give them to a friend / whatever?
Just did a quick Google but couldn't see one .. :-(
All the best ..

I'm not sure you'll find something that works - I remember as a child I
had a rubber fish that looked very real, but of course it would float
and didn't move!
You don't have to have realistic ones - maybe you could get some of
those glass ones that are connected to a floating glass orb, at least
that way they float around the tank.

Go to a toy store and look for plastic fish that look real. Or try a Natural
Wonders store (here in the US), they often have animal toys that look
realistic. A teacher store might also have realistic looking fish.
You could hook fishing line to their bottom and add a weight to suspend them
at a certain depth (if they float).

Sig: Say no to fixed width HTML tables. They look terrible in most browsers.
