View Full Version : Crocea Clam Overexpansion Bad?

Have recently place a 4 1'2" Crocea clam in the bottom of my 150
gallon reef tank. It sits about 30" away from a 250 watt HQI MH. It
has been in the tank for two weeks, and it seemingly continues to
expand more and more. I do not believe I have seen many clams this
expanded. Is this good, or could it mean that it is not getting
enough light.

The mantle should be around 1/2" or so overlapping the shell, and you should
not be able to see any of its inner shells. If you can, then there are some
water quality issues and your clam isnt under ideal conditions.
Get your hands on a copy of "Giant Clams" by D. Knop if you need more
details.

Is good. The more the clam opens, the better the water conditions and not
necessarily due to lighting IME.
I had a 3" squamosa clam and now have a 6" squamosa clam (same clam) 2 years
later. Triple 250 watt metal halides on a 125 with DSB and heavy skimming.

It could be that it's expanding to make the most of the light it can get. Try
moving it up closer little by little and see what happens. 30" away is a
pretty decent distance. It would also prob appreciate being placed on a rock
so that it may attach.

Mantle expansion is good, but there is such a thing as hyper-extension.
And that's not so good. It's hard to tell sometimes with croceas because
they have the farthest mantle expansion.
Basically it's hard to tell unless you are there to see the clam. But,
like other posters have said it may be stretching for light.
