View Full Version : Sick tetra - white patch on back

One of my rummy nose tetras is showing some discoloration on the back. It
looks like a white patch, with no visible texture to it (eg no bumps or
"cotton" growth). This has appeared overnight, after a large water change
(1/3 of the water). For pictures of the sick fish, go to:

These guys are pretty elusive and hard to photograph. For reference, the
other healthy tetra has a much darker back. Other than the white patch, the
fish is eating and acting normally. What kind of disease could this be?
Should I separate this fish?

The parameters before the water change: pH 7, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate
40 ppm. The nitrates are fluctuating a lot, I've been trying to keep them
down.

The tank is 20 gallon with live plants, and AquaClear 300 power filter. The
inhabitants are: rummy nose tetras (6), rasboras (6), neons (2), cardinals
(2), male guppies (7), platy (1).

I've never seen anything like this before. Please help.
Thanks.

Looks like "neon disease" (Pleistophora) to me. This disease is
contagious, particularly if an infected fish dies and others pick at it.
Isolate the fish and treat with a remedy containing naladixic acid.

Thanks. This sure looks like neon disease. I just did some research on it,
and I am going to isolate this fish.
