View Full Version : Australian (Victorian) Quarantine Laws

On the weekend, I went looking for zebra loaches (on the suggestion of
someone in another thread), only to find that they are not legal in
Australia.

Apparently, many of my LFS's are under investigation at the moment,
based on (bogus?) claims of their involvement in illegal importing
activities, made by a woman who was caught at Tullamarine airport with
dozens of fish strapped to her (see
http://www.themercury.news.com.au/printpage/0,5942,15535207,00.html).

I understand that this newsgroup is international, but it is incredibly
frustrating to go to the trouble to research a species, only to find
that they are not available down-under. I have looked around all the
government quarantine websites, but can't find a definitive (and easily
understood) list of fish that are legal in Australia.

Does anyone here have such a list?

To (almost) answer my own question, I found this facility...

http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon32/asp/homecontent.asp

You can key in the scientific name of any species (or part thereof) and
it will show all species that can be imported. Those not listed are not
allowed.

Not the nice list I'm after (I'd really like something with scientific
and common names) but at least it's a start.

And oh... we only get 1 species of Botia down here.. the good 'ol clown.

And if i had of read further, I would have found the list.

Simply search for "Freshwater Fish" on the above site, and scroll
down... way down.

Here in New Zealand most Botia are legal... at the moment!
I have heard that there are new quarantine laws about to be introduced that
will prohibit nearly all imported fish in NZ, I hope it doesn't come about
as it will be an end to a lot of peoples aquariums.
