View Full Version : Water Lily Not Blooming
September 7th 05, 04:23 AM
I inherited a pond that had been neglected for several years. I added
a few water lilies which are doing well, but the water lily that was in
the pond already has thrown up several lily pads all summer, but no
buds/blooms. Can this be fixed, by dividing and repotting (for next
year) or is it possible the lily is damaged and won't produce flowers?
thanks!

Dividing and repotting waterlilies with good heavy clay soil and a Jobe's
Rose Fertilizer spike broken into thirds does wonders for them! Mine have
been blooming since June here in zone 6 (middle TN). They don't bloom or do
well when they're starving and have overgrown their pots.

The lily probably needs to be divided. Most hardies need to be divided
every year. They also need fertilization.

I know it needs to be devided the question is, will a severely non
devided lily throw up pads and not flowers or do I have an additional
problem...

=====================
Yes they will throw up pads. The pads will get smaller and smaller. No,
they will not flower or they will have small and/or few flowers. Most will
not bloom at all when badly in need of dividing and repotting.

Mine also don't bloom much (3 blooms all summer from about 6 water
lilys). I've been afraid to fertilize as I plant all my plants in pea
gravel and thought it would just seep into the pond. Does anyone use
pea gravel and fertilize? I don't particularly like using dirt because
it clouds the water.

$$ Mine were like that until I started using Jobe's Rose Spikes broken into
thirds or fourths and stuck down in their pots. Cover the spike with soil
and gravel. What a difference it made! Some lilies are shy bloomers
though and others bloom their heads off from mid spring to first frost.

$$ I learned that lilies will not do well in gravel. Gravel doesn't hold the
nutrients they need to flourish and flower.

$$ If you cover the soil with about 2" of gravel it shouldn't cloud the
water.

To keep this from happening use a sandy soil. Line basket with weed cloth
and use weed cloth strips on the top. If you have koi, use large river rock
on top of the cloth. ~ jan
