View Full Version : What should I put in my tank?

I have a Via Aqua 380 sitting on my desk in my office at work.
The tank holds 10 gallons with the gravel that I currently have in it.
It is 15x10 inches at the base and 17 inches tall.

I'm using the stock light, a single fluorescent tube and
an Aqua Clear 30 filter. I'll add a heater later if I need one. Temp is
currently 76 degrees.

I am only in the office 3 days a week, sometimes less. So I need to keep
fish that are pretty hardy. I also need something with light care
requirements because I can't spend a lot of time maintaining the tank. I
plan to do a weekly 1-2 gallon water change.

I'm open to just about anything. I'm willing to understock this tank and
add a bigger filter if it gives me or 'wiggle room' with the care
requirements.

Correction, it's an Aqua Clear 150.

A couple of male, and several female guppies, plus lots of small to medium
plants.

After some more reading I've decided that this is a good idea. The LFS
will have java moss on Friday so I'll get some then and a few days later
add a pair of guppies.

Later I might add a beta to thin the population out a bit

Bettas and fancy guppies don't mix. The betta mistakes the guppies'
flowing tails for another betta and attacks. Guppies also need to be
fed more than three times a week, particularly young ones. I hope
you're planning on an automatic feeder.

Have you considered posting to rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc? That group
gets a lot more traffic and you may get more suggestions.

hey sorry that nobody answered you, the key to having a "low maintenice"
tank is to try and have it maintain itself, that is to get an self
sustaining ecosystem in that lil ten gallon, which is no easy task.
bettas are good hardy fish but it's hard to have more than one,
gouramies are in the same family of betas and they are generally more
peaceful than betas. java moss would be good because every ecosystem
needs plants, you should also try and get mabe a couple bottom feeders,
like some cory's and a type of small algae eater, NOT A PLECO they get
to big for a ten gallon.
