Yeah, $1,000 will work but that will just be the price of the tank. You
are going to need EVERYTHING else.

You're kidding right? That $1000 was just the cost of a glass tank
(drilled). I haven't even thought about pricing an acrylic tank that size.
Some people might consider a tank stand optional (but not me). You might
also want some lighting and quality lighting if it is going to be a reef is
more expensive than regular NO's you might want to run on a FO tank.
How about a skimmer? Some pumps for water circulation are necessary as
well, especially for a reef tank.

it could cost you 2000$ just to do a 60 gallon right!!!!!!!
but not to discourage you, i had a 60 gal, started off with keeping salt
right, with one flourescent light, and basic wetdry filter(200$, paid 100$
brand new, wholesale). tank was probably a hundred or two brand new in late
1980's. put some sand in there and some dead rock, or soon to be dead and
full of that cruddy maroon algae, and hair on the walls, only to be cleaned
regulary with magnet cleaners, and vacuumed DIRT from bottom once month or
two while nitrates enjoyed a cieling like never before, this went on for
about 7 yrs with fish lasting a year or two usually and water always looked
clean. then i got into reefing.
poured about only 150 dollars in lighting, built my own hood of wood, have
160 wtts of coral life flourescents, and spent about 100 dollars on
chemicals, 40 dollars on sand, and 5 dollars on airstones to get a protien
skimmer going, and 35 dollars on a 300 watt heater, your going to need about
3 of these atleast, and then i let the fish die off and started a reef
recently. I WILL NOT BUY A BRINE SHRIMP EATING FISH until i see this reef
busting at the seems, then i will get some gobys and blue tang and then
start feeding my tank fish food only at that point, with VERY FEW food
addition eating fish(2-4) This is the cheap way my friend, its all about
keeping NO FISH or your equip, and system, if not state of the art
expensive, will prob fail to do its job. Money can be dumped into a tank
easily ove time, i would get a 100-150 gallon to start off with, this would
be in the middle of the price range and safety margins of having enough
water for a beginner.
Buy lights, buy aragonite, buy sugar fine sand, buy RO water, buy premium
salt, buy test kits, buy stand and tank, make SURE STAND has ALOT of ROOM
underneath!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or just build one from some Redwood 2x4's, you can
save ALOT of money, BUILD a hood after you have ALL the tank equipment
together and cycling and know how much space you will need for your hands in
the top for maintenance-feeding, cleaning, siphoning, and placing and
removiing rocks(may just want to remove hood completely for the adding of
rocks). The tank may be what costs you, WHATEVER YOU DO, DONT SCRATCH YOUR
NEW TANK, DONT EVER GET SAND OR GRAVEL CAUGHT BETWEEN YOUR CLEANING MEDIUM
AND THE INSIDE OF THE TANK WHEN YOU CLEAN THE GLASS OR ACRYLIC, EVER
EVER!!!!!!! otherwise you will regret this for eternity! right guys!
