View Full Version : Is pH a problem?

My 120gal pond with waterfall has excellent chemistry, ammonia, nitrates,
nitrites
etc, but not pH. It reads 8.5++. The fish seem happy. Should I be
concerned? Purchased a bottle of pH down. Just seems to be
conc.sulphuric acid. Added what was suggested. No change in pH. Used
two different methods to measure, so consider the results correct.
Thanks,
Martin

$$ The PH in my ponds hovers around 8.6 to 8.8, even higher at times and all
the goldfish and koi are thriving. It's worse to have it go up and down
using PH adjusters. Pond fish adjust nicely to higher PHs.
Purchased a bottle of pH down.
$$ Toss it in the trash. :-)

$$ If you're fish are fine DO NOT MESS with the PH!

The oH is not so much a problem as the rapid changes in pH. More important
is the KH. KH is the carbonate hardness and it is what stabilizes the pH.
The pH Down type products consume the KH first, until it is gone, the pH
will remain high, then the next little dose will cause a pH crash. Much
better to ignore the pH, well get it for informational purposes, and
concentrate on measuring and maintaining the KH. My pH is always above 8.4.
The good bacteria in the filter also consume KH, so baking soda needs to be
added to the pond to maintain KH. Some use shells, limestone, or other form
of carbonate, but the pH has to dip for them to become soluble, and until
they disolve, they do not contribute to the KH.
