I have some problems with my 125 g tank. Ever since I set it up, the
water seems to be kind of cloudy. Even with after few months with fish
and plants, it still has some kind of small particles floating in the
water all the time.
I used to have a 55 g tank with UGF and never had the same problem.
Here is my set up
I have a Fluval 404 canister filter that suppose to handle 100g tank,
and I have two power heads with some kind of UGF. I just don't
understand what went wrong.
This has been bug me for more than a year now. Any help is greatly
appiciated.

If you got a 125g tank and only a filter that supports 100g maybe that could
be it?... How much do you feed them a day? What kind of fish do you have in
the tank? Does UGF stand for undergravel filter if so they are way out of
date and not to great anyway... I would recommend making about 20% water
changes maybe once a week and vacumming the gravel, or maybe getting a
better filter, i have 4 filters on my 129g and it is perfectly clear, i got
2 magnum 350 systems and 2 power filters with the biowheels... The magnum
350 pro filter systems are the best (IMO) to have, they got 2 biowheels per
system and run at 350 gallon per our plus they are canister filters... They
keep my tanks CRYSTAL clear...
Thanks

I guess you are right then. My Fluval 404 ran at 340 g per hour and
that's about half you have. I don't like it because the filter foams
are inside the canister and it is very hard to clean them or replace
them. I guess I will go with the Magnum 350 then. Maybe just add one
to the existing set up. It it easy to clean the Magnum 350?
I have mostly rainbow fish an some cat fish with plants. I feed them 2
times a day. Maybe I should cut that down too. My plants are not in
great shape these days. I have the plants food tabs put in from time
to time but they make water murky too. That's why I'm not put them in
as much as I should and my plants were not doing well. Any idea what's
good for the plants AND not cloud the water?
Thanks for the help mate.

Co2 injection (either DIY or commercial) and careful fertilization with
either PMDD (poor man's dosing drops) or a commercial product. Doing it the
PMDD way is nice because you can make your own "mix" catered specifically to
your situation. Check out rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants for more
information. Good luck and later!

Yes you can just add one of the magnum 350 pro systems to the existing
setup. They are very easy to clean, all you do is take off a few clips take
out the filter cartridge rinse off and place back in and clip back together,
takes maybe 5 minutes. I hope this helps you.
Thanks,

You could add a hang on the back filter like an Aquaclear or whatever you
like. I have a 90g with an over flow and sump system (700gph), and I added
an Aquaclear 70 (300gph) and a small powerhead in the tank to keep the
bottom of the tank flowing. Im sure it's overkill, but my water is allways
crystal clear, and I think most would agree that it's better to over filter
then under filter. I also have an Aquaclear 500 (now called 110) on a 60g
and an Emperor 280 on a 29g, you get the idea.

Thanks guys for the response. I ordered a Fluval 304, which is suppose
to handle 70 g. My reasons for this was parts and known performance
with my existing Fluval 404. Also, I'm very picky on noise levels.
Since I never used other filters, I'm not confortable order them over
the net. Plus, my tank is so close to the wall that I can not put
anything in between.
Anyway, my new filter will be here in few days and I will update you
guys about the water.
As for the plants, my current worry is the water and fish. Until I get
the water fixed, I'm afraid of putting anything in it.
Thanks again.
