Large white spots on inside of gills killing my fish?

Help please anyone.

I have recently bought some pearlscales and I am losing them slowly
one by one I have been keeping fish for a few years now and have come
across mnost diseases and have treated most of them successfully except
this one. As they swim around you can clearly see two spots on the red
part of their gill on the inside, the spots are about the size of
this(o). There is nothing else on them although one fish has a tiny nick
on the front fin. They eat and swim around without any problems then
gradually it affects their breathing and they separate themselves some
of the time they still eat ok but the day on one I have seen a white
length (very short and not very easy to see) stringy stuff coming out
of the gill and although they are still eating and swimming the next day
they die. I have lost about three now and two others have the same
problems and two others are not happy I don't want to loose them all! I
have been treating them with a medicine that is meant to kill protozans
and fungus, costia also velvet but it doesn't say if it treats
chilodonella, as I haven't seen the latter I don't know what it is.

Any help desperatly needed to save the rest. Please.

Do you have a microscope that you could put a piece of the filament
under for exam to see what you're battling? Is it something you would
feel comfortable doing?

Have you tried treating for ick? Sometimes before you see it on the
exterior of the fish, it has already invaded the gills. Just a thought.

I'm sure others will chime in with other ideas too.

Have you checked out any Goldfish/koi sites such as www.koivet.com? It's
hard to suggest anything if you can't tell us more. I found QuickCure
excellent for parasites. Clout is excellent for a wide range of parasitic
and protozoan infestations. FlukeTabs will get rid of flukes. It sounds
like it may be gill-mites if it's attacking their gill filaments.

I'm loathe to recomment Clout or Fluke Tabs because I cannot remember
which one is the one that burns your fish if you've got soft water.

Isolating the fish in a smaller tank, like a 10g, and treating with
Quick Cure as Carol suggests is probably the best all around shotgun
method since it offs bacteria and parasites.

I began treating with antibiotic food laced with garlic additive and
using ANTI-FLUKE. I don't even know what med is working, but I am down
to just those two items (changed water in between) and they are going away.

# I've not heard of that problem Lilly. Those are very effective meds that
do work, unlike so much of the products sold in the pet shops.

# If the problem is gillmites QuickCure may not get rid of them. It's hard
to suggest a treatment long distance without a scrape.

It is definitely a problem in soft water. I've had it happen, and
others in different parts of the country with soft water have had it
happen. The fish winds up looking like it's been rolled in soot.
