why dont i need a chiller? my temp stays rock steady at 79deg or wherever i
set it. My heater is not i the tank, it is in an area of high flow, in the
intake of the siphon chamber. my lights are NO, i suspect this is why. i
have a home build wood hood with 4-4 footers inside. they are 3 inches off
the surface, last hood they were closer and still no heat prob of course.
there is vents on the hood, between the hinged surfaces and i keep a
deerhide laying over the top because the deerskin leather keeps the moisture
from all leaking away from heat evaporation through the hinge vents. my
house ranges from 52 degrees to 88 degrees inside as well. like now its prob
76 inside, and will prob be 58 inside in a few weeks nights to come. i have
a wood burning stove that i lite when its gets below 55or 52 in the house or
when i want to be comfortable, lol. no city slickers here, haha.

i assume there are some systems that add extra heat, what are they?

Systems with Metal Halid lights, and lots of pumps in the tank. When you
live outside of the warm temperate or tropical zones, you don't need to
worry about a chiller. My house stays at a steady 22 C, and I have no
problems keeping my tank at 82 F.

with 800w of MH lighting over my 75 its hard to keep below 82 deg regardless
of the inside temp of my house. my 180 stays at 80ish most of the time. I
don't use a chiller, but if I had one, I would. :)

for me I don't see why anyone needs a heater in a reef setup. mine never
drop below 78. (tanks with MH lighting and lots of
circulation..............Full Blown Reef's)

I have a 29 grow out tank that with its 400w MH light the temp is around 94
(yes that isn't a typo) and when I don't have any corals in it and turn the
light off the temp drops to a nice cool 68ish.

I have 30w of NO on my 46 FOWLR, and my temp never goes below 82F. I took the
heater out long ago (since it NEVER kicked on) and I use it to heat replacement
water.

I'd venture to say Phil you have some high heat pumps in your system then.
30w of any type light should not heat that size of a tank to any noticeable
"above ambient" temp. so unless you keep your tank in an 80ish environment
your getting heat from pumps, powerheads, etc.....

Have you checked the thermometer? Perhaps it is "stuck"?

Just a suggestion.

And just what corals are you keeping with 160w over a 4ft tank?
