View Full Version : Homemade fish food

I recently tried making homemade fish food for my Clownfish.
I used about:
10 whole shrimp
30 small freeze dried krill
1 oz fresh salmon
1 oz frozen whitefish
..25 oz flake food
..25 oz kelp pellets

I blended these into a paste and added gelatin.

It's dark greyish-green color and I'm wondering why the clownfish
won't touch it.
When I put it in the tank they get excited and will "sniff" it but
won't even take a bite. I'm wondering if it's a problem with the
color. I seen them show a preference for pink or yellow in flake
foods.

Or maybe they don't like the texture. It stays mostly solid for about
16 hours in the tank. I've disolved it in warm water and then fed
them the tiny little pieces. They seem ok with that but the pieces
are so small then. It's almost a liquid at that point.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Do you freeze it when it is prepared? I make my own, and then break off a small
piece to thaw when it is time to feed. No gelatin, and I don't process it to
the point of being a liquid, if posssible. I like it to look a little rougher,
like "grits" or sand granules.

I made up a batch using squid, prawns, mussels, and Selcon a couple of
months ago. I spread the result on a flat tray, froze it, then broke it
into sheets that fit into a lunch box. Stored in the freezer, I break
pieces off with a spoon and feed my clown fish and corals with it.

I have a dog and have yet to taste test his kibble. Any cat lovers out
there with culinary experience? (-;

Marc,

Would you consider selling a few packs of that ready made food?

No, that idea never entered my mind. However, you can just follow the
instructions on that page and make as much or as little as you like.

It is frozen after all, and I'd rather not attempt to send a frozen block(s) of
food unless it was the dead of winter. <grin>

Howdy Marc,

The hard part of doing this for me is living in a crappy little town where
some if not most of the ingredients for a mix like that can't be found. I
have to drive 30 miles just to get regular fish food for the SW critters
that I have. We have 3 different stores close to here that deal in FW
supplies but nothing for SW. I told my LFS that he needs to open a shop in
my town and he said for around a million dollars he would do it. Well....
It was just a thought. Thanks anyway.

Adam, you do not really need to include all ingredient Marc use. If you just
have just the shrimp, scollap, nori and marine pallet, then use those and
blend together. If you really need those, you can go online and order some
dry food. Driving 30 mile will cost you like arount $2.00 or so per gallon
of gas for about 20 something mile and it about the same as shipping when
you order online.

If you still insist of getting from a store and not online, then try Target,
Wal-Mart, PetCo and Petsmart.

Try:
http://www.petsolutions.com/
http://www.marinedepot.com
http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/

The above link will have all the SW food.

Hmmm....
This discussion has all been interesting. But what about my original
question? (See below)

I'm fairly confident that the clownfish are disinterested in my
gourmet cooking due to either the color or texture.
Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks,
Erik

I agree, I have never had much luck with fish eating food that had any
gelatin or other "binders"
