Hello,
I am starting a 90 gal reef with plenum. I intend to start with 30
pounds of live rock and add more as I go along.
I read that some people put Shrimp to cylcle. Do you have good or bad
things to say about that method?
Thanks

That's what I used for cycling of all my tanks. Works great, though I have
heard of some people saying that the smell is bad from the rotting shrimp, I
never had a problem with smell being an issue.
LR, I have 31 lbs in my 20g tank, for a 90, you're going to be wanting a
heck of a lot more. My 130g has ~70 lbs, and looks empty, I need to double
the amount of rock in that tank, but I have to wait because my wife wants to
pick it out, she wants nice looking rock... :)

I did this too and then I realized that if you put the shrimp in and they
start to decompose that adds the bad bacteria into your water, but what then
generates the good stuff to create a balance?
I think the LR would be enough to get the cycle started and maybe add in
some clean up crew.

ps the rotten fish does stink and looks horrible after a while

dont quote me on this,
the dying shrimp creates hella ammonia as it rotts away in the water, then
the bacteria already present on all living organisms on the decaying shrimp
feeds, grows and becomes more abundant, bacteria eats and breaks down shrimp
and ammonia and becomes healthy and abundant and established in your tank.
when you add fish, fish food, or food for your live rock to your tank, and
ammonia is excreted by them, the bacteria is already established, then goes
to work on it in full force.

I added 2 medium shrimp to my quarantine tank (15 gal w/ 15 #'s LR) 6 days
ago.
The tank had been cycling for 8 days after the rock cured. After 3 days I
tested and had 0.50 PPM ammonia. Not fully trusting this method, I pulled
the shrimp out after testing, fearing the levels might shoot up and kill
some of the life in my rock. The water stank and part of the shrimp slothed
off when I removed it.
Today, 3 days after removing the shrimp I tested again, and the levels were
..0 PPM.
Go figure.
Our 55 gal tank, sump and accessories arrives tomorrow. Once it's set-up I
think we'll try the shrimp technique again to cycle the tank.
Thanx.
