I got my first marine fish today which my 3 year old picked out. A Percula
Clown of coarse. He seems to be struggling in the current so I turned it
off. Basically with it on he was only in one place and appeared to be
breathing hard. Now that it is off he is moving around and exploring the
tank. I have 29 gallon with a JBJ sp1800 is this too much? I couldn't find
its gph on the box anywhere or the net.

Hi Kelly,

They like to swim in the current, so feel free to turn your pump back on. If it
is too much for the clownfish, it will go to a spot that is more calm. Welcome
to the hobby!

So, as I was sending out that last post I noticed that my tanks water level
was 3 or 4 inches lower than it was 10 minutes earlier. After a quick run to
Wal-Mart and buckets, pots and bowels all over my office I now have a larger
fish tank and I am hoping that power head will be fine now. Also, I am
hoping my clown will last over night in a 5 gallon while the sand in the new
tank settles and I can put the LR and the clean up crew back in.

I assume the clown will be ok for another week before I add any other fish
though? I want to wait since I just had to do a 60% water change (since 40%
soaked into the carpets).

The LFS also said they *need* an anemone and I have read mixed opinions on
this on the net.

Thanks Marc!

Kelly, be sure to put a powerhead and a heater in that bucket for the night, so
the water stays active and warm enough for the fish.

You want the surface to break gently, to continue providing oxygenation.

No, you don't have to have an anemone. They are very hard to keep, especially
for someone new to the hobby. You need to have a stable tank and good
lighting. I always recommend the person wait 6 to 9 months to get some
experience first before taking on a creature such as that.

There was a nice slide show of clownfish hosting in other creatures besides
anemones in Reefkeeping Online:
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-06/reefslides/index.htm

Don't rush on the addition of a new fish. After a week or two, test your water
for Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates again. If you get 0 on the first two tests,
and your nitrates are still less than 20ppm (10ppm would be better), you could
add a new fish then.

Remember that your fishtank needs to adapt to the newer (heavier) bio-load each
time you add a new creature into that closed environment.

My percula loves to play in the current, he swims against it on purpose.
