Hello,
I am cycling my new 90 gal and in the live rock that I bought
where 2 shrimps, I am not certain of the name but, I think candy
shrimp they are red with white stripes. Will they survive the cycling
or I am better to try and get them out.
The setup is plenum with 3.5 inch cruched coral, I bought 20 pounds on
live sand and 30 pounds of live rock. I put RO water Friday and the
salt yesterday put the live rock and sand.
Thanks in advance.

they should be fine and will help with cycling

from the "candy cane" description, I would just guess they are CBS (coral
banded shrimp) and they do not tolerate high amounts of NO2, NO3, or NH4.
and unless they are a mated pair, they will kill one another soon enough.
But if they die............................. like JR said, they will help
with the cycle.

I am certain they are not coral banded, coral banded have long arms
with claws. They are red with little with stripes running all there
body long.
Usualy does shrimp survive cycling? I was very surprised to see that
they add survive out of watter for at least 7 hours in the live rock.
Thanks

They might be pepermint or camel shrimp.
Pretty tough critters they will survive the cycle process
more than likely I wouldn't worry about them.

I would go with camel or peppermint. They WILL definitely die during
your cycle unless you bought cured live rock. If you bought cured
live rock their is about a 50/50 chance they will die curing a
mini-cycle.
good luck.

Thanks for the info. I also saw a little crab, I will investigate to
see if he is reef frendly.

It is interesting story about shrimps surviving in waterless transport.
Where did you get your life rock from?
I would rather take them out, they probably not survive amonia/nitrite peaks
if you are cycling from the beginning whithout substrate from a working tank.
