View Full Version : Overflow noise...Newbie question

We just got our 55 gallon on a test run w/ FW. The overflow w/ pre filter
makes quite a racket.
Any suggestions for quieting the overflow drain. I'm pushing 1100 gal/hr
through the return jets at top speed. I have slowed it a little but still
noisy.
Should I lower my water level? Slow it down more? How fast should it be
flowing down to my sump (10 gallon)?

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanx.

Mark,

Running freshwater versus sal****er is very different. Plus after two weeks,
the plumbing will develop a slime coating that will help a bunch. Finally,
remove the sponge filter because it is a trap for floating debris and a nitrate
creater.

If you still deal with noise, do a search for "stockman standpipe"

Thanx!
I'm going to try the Durso standpipe first. It looks like a good design
also.
Anything better will make my wife happy.

i use 2 'Durso's' on my 180 and they are very quite. also haveing the water
not drop all the way to the bottom of the overflows helps as well, i keep
mine about 2" down from water level.

there is a cure for that and it worked perfectly for me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I
went and got me one of them things called a "DIVORCE". they didnt have them
at the LFS so i had to special order one via the court system and pay in
advance.

I never hear a complaint about my tanks anymore.

YMMV

Marc,

Do you run with any type of sponge filters through your system? Is the
protein skimmer and biological filteration the only things you are using?

I have a converted wet/dry, but kept the sponge and a cotton filter that I
try and change regularly (but sometimes forget :( ). My nitrates do go up,
and I've removed both of these in hopes that this is actually the cause ...

Thanks!

Yikes...That's a high price to pay just to keep noisy tanks. I think I'd
just purchase $15.00 worth of PVC and construct a quieter system for my
overflow.

No, nothing stops the flow of bits of junk from running through the system. The
PS catches larger particles, and the rest is likely consumed by something on
some molecular level, or settles on the rockwork/sand. I've been running both
tanks like that for more than a year with no problems at all.

You do not really need spong filter. Skimmer will take care of those
nutrient or small particle that flow around. Other heavier particle will
sink and will be taken care by your janitoral critter. Sponge and any other
filter or floss will increase your nitrate from trapped particle. This
in-turn will cause your PS to do extra duty until those trapped particle
decay or manually removed. Decay particle will introduce bacteria to consume
and will cause small cycle of your tank.

Only filter in reef are:
LS
LR
Janitoral critter [shrimp / star / crab / worm / snail / grazing critter
like tank / and algae (yes algae)]

No mechanical filter exception of PS.
