View Full Version : Soundproofing the sump cabinet???

Looking for advice on soundproofing a 75 gallon marine reef aquarium.
My wife is the newbie fish freak, I'm just the plumber. I've searched
every bulletin board and Internet site I can find and know about
different pumps and plumbing configurations, including the "Durso
Standpipe." I've taken all those measures, but still find the noise
excessive. Now I'm considering lining the inside of the cabinet that
contains the sump with industrial strength soundproofing materials.
I'm looking at materials from places like these:
http://www.extremesoundproofing.com/Products/products.html
http://www.auralex.com/
http://www.controlnoise.com/dbbloc.html
Those materials look promising, but I'm surprised and confused that I
find little or no mention in the aquarium discussion boards and web
sites of soundproofing the sump cabinet.
Has anyone tried it? Does it work? Any problems with heat build-up
inside the cabinet when it is lined with insulation?
Sincerely,
Noisy in Iowa

Go to your local Heating/AC shop an get some black Acoustiliner (aka duct
liner) It's a black fiberglas we use in ductwork to eliminate noise.
Should be pretty inexpensive.
It's semi-rigid so you can fasten it with just about anything and it cuts
with a raxor knife or scissors. Get the 1/2 or 1 " thickness. It will
smell a bit fishy for the first day.

Dan, are you in the HVAC field too? I work for a "Heating/AC shop".
This insulation you are talking about, is it the same as the armaflex
sheets? (black stuff)
These usually come in a 3' X 4' sheets right?

I had heat problems when I used to have a sump.
I had to install a fan to blow the heat out of the sump cabinet. It
added more noise but was still quieter than with out the insulation in
the cabinet.
I used regular insulation board. Blue stuff.

No, this isn't neoprene like Armaflex. It's black fiberglas and comes on a
100'roll. Your Bench/Layoutman has it to line duct with. While it has a
low R-value it absorbs a lot ouf sound. I am lining my new stand with it.
Yes, I've been in HVAC for 31 years.

I tried the advice. The only stuff I cound find from HVAC suppliers
locally was yellow, not black. It's about twice as dense/heavy as
plain insullation board from a common lumber yard.
We lined the entire sump cabinet, but did not have much improvement.
However, the experience hepled prove that the majority of noise is
coming from the standpipe drain. Ours is an "AllGlass" aquarium with
the standpipe drain inside the tank, drilled through the bottom. A
black plastic shroud covers the plumbing inside the main tank. It
appears that this configuration creates a "sound tunnel" so that the
drain noise is channeled up through the top of the tank.
Any brilliant ideas on how to deal with that?

google for "durso standpipe"
the durso standpipe is an easy DIY standpipe that should be
quieter. There are a couple of variations depending on your needs.

Go to rec.aquaria.marine.misc and look at the thread for quieting an
overflow.
Sorry you couldn'd find the ductliner...it works.
