Let's say you have a budget of $700.00 to spend on lighting and you wanted a
48" "hood" with 300 - 500 watts of light (MH).

What would you get if you wanted to keep clams and other "light demanding"
creatures?

Also, if you were to get PC supplimentation, would it reduce that "rippling"
effect that MH lights provide?

TIA

I'd get 2x250w MH retro's they run about 200 bucks ea.

the pc's wont cut down on the rippling, but if your going to use
supplemental lighting, use VHO it has a nicer appearance.

Hmm, that's very interesting. I've never heard that before but it is
definately worth a try. Thanks

Thanks for the link Mike. What I am trying to do is get a nice hood that
can be used right on top of my tank similar to my JBJ Formosa light fixture.
The Formosa is PC though and I definately want MH now.
Part of my problem is that I do not want to have a canopy on this particular
tank so that is why I am looking for a hood that can go right on the glass
tops. Any suggestions?

What's the difference between a canopy and a hood?
Are you looking for a DIY or a ready to go unit?
You are probably going to want MH and VHO/PC's combo, maybe not.

When I say hood, I am referring to a hooded light fixture like this...

A good example of a canopy can be seen here...

Yes, I am looking for a ready to go unit and I would like to run MH or a
combo of MH/VHO.
