View Full Version : Algae help needed
Broken

I'm starting a new 30 gal. marine fish only tank (only 2 small damsels, and
a piece of synthetic coral in there now) and going through the cycle, which
is almost complete. Amonia,
nitrites and PH (8.2) are all stable. I have done a 20% and then 50% water
change to no avail. In the last week out of nowhere the tank was overrun
with a brown/orange algae, which has now turned to a light
green, completly covering the crushed coral substrate and the piece of
synthetic
coral, but not much on the glass. I'm interested in the cause and how to
prevent it, but right now I just want to know the best product (some kind of
algae destroyer) to get rid of
it.
TIA

Applies to freshwater cycles and I suspect is the same for sal****er. The
breakdown goes ammonia, to nitrite, to nitrATE. I'd suspect your cycle is to
the point where the nitrate levels are skyrocketing. Nitrate is a major part
of fertilizers and algae are plants. Water changes help get rid of it.
The Algae needs light to live. If you are 'fish-only', I'd think you could
simply remove all light from the tank for a period of time.
In fresh tanks, eventually the algae "eats" all the nitrate and dies off.
The algae destroyers that I know of all contain substances that could kill
the good bacteria in your bio-bed (filter, etc.) You also want to check that
nothing in that tank is shedding phosphates as plants love that stuff, too.
I'll shut up and let the 'salters' have at...just some ideas and I'm sorry
if I'm out of line.

Although you do not need RO/DI water for a FO tank, your water changes could
be adding things like silica or diatoms which is what cause the brown algae
blooms.
