How harmful is a sallylightfoot crab ? I am wondering if one will prey on
my snails and crabs.
Has anyone had any experience with them ?

Thanks,

I have kept these crabs for years. They are very active and great on the
algae. I have never had a problem with them going after snails or other crabs
(although I seem to have read somewhere they can be semi-aggressive). I would
not keep more than one in a tank, unless the tank is really large. They will
fight each other. I moght also suggest an algae blenny.

I "Had" a sally lightfoot. If you only keep one, once they are big enough
and get frisky and no mate around they will kill and eat your fish. 3
yellow tangs, regal tang and others. I did know what they heck was going on
and didn't think that he was the culprit until one night I saw my Mandarine
dragonet freeking out swimming all over the tank and Mandarine dragonets
(IME usually aren't that active) then I saw the crab chasing him. Bye, bye
crab. don't get one. It also ate my snails and other crabs, all of them
over time, I thought maybe they just died but nope was the crab that
killed'm. My tank is now over 5 years old, well stocked and doing great.
My tank was also doing great at the time of the smorge. I got rid of the
crab, the mandarine goby is still alive and all new fish are healthy.

IME&O,

Aaron

The reason I asked is that I saw my Sallylightfoot try to haul a turbo snail
in to a crevice but I did know if it would actually harm it. Now I know.
One more question. I also have a hitchhiker. It is a another crab that is
darkgray/black with some mean looking claws and bright red eyes. It always
hides in crevices and I have never seen it out all by itself. Does anyone
know what this thing is and if it is harmful.
I seem to loose a lot of turbo's over time and I am trying to figure out
why.

Thanks,

I have a 90 gallon reef tank and recently purchased a stocked 180 bow front.
The guy said he just couldn't keep fish or corals, I thought that it was the
way the tank was kept as it was in prety rough shape when I bought it, 4
year old lights, etc.. After moving the tank from his place to mine and
placing all of his rock, etc in it. My wife noticed something moving, it
was a gorilla crab. I guess that was the reason most of his fish died, it
wasn't him but then he gave up on the tank and let it go for a while before
selling it. The tank is in great shape now though. From what I have read
in these groups is any hictch hiking crab with claws is BAD.
