Is there any bad effects of small fan blowing directly over a 250 watt MH ?
Just thought I would ask before mounting the fans in my new hood...

I read just the opposite of that last night. I am by no means an expert on
this but I have been reading up a lot on MH. I'll see if I can find it.

well i post just on an IME as i have fans blowing directly across my 250's
and 400's and have had them doing so for over 2 years. i have no problems
from it, never had a bulb 'go bad', explode, crack, etc..........

but as always YMMV.

Please dont take it personally kc. I value your input and experience as
much as everyone else.

I did look around for it but I can not find where I read it. I have been
doing SO much reading on MH lately it has become an obsession.

In your defense, I will say that I only saw it in ONE place, not several.

IF I happen to find it again, I'll post the source and then we can determine
if it is reliable. =)

I looked through my history from yesterday and I could not find the exact
article that I had read but I did turn up a few similar hits in my
searching...

dont worry i didnt take it personal at all, i was simply saying that my post
was on an IME, i dont have any scientific data to back any of it up. but
fact is it works for me and works well.

i read that, it is a posting on a board with opinions just like here.
the point i took from it was that it cools the bulb and therefore reduces
the light output. i dont see this with my bulbs as they get prety dang hot,
i have scares from touching them with the back of my hand when i was working
in the tank once.

Me neither =\
And with the lack of info on it Ken, I would not worry about it.

Thats pretty close. What I have read and been told is the HID bulbs
require some minimum tempature to properly ionize the gases in the
bulb. Now keep in mind that there are two basic types of MH bulbs. The
HQI types that don't have the outer glass and the standard base
(mogul) type that have a small bulb in the center with a larger glass
bulb around it. The standard base types are less sensitive to the fan
problem as the fan blows on the outer glass jacket and not the inner
one. The HQI style bulbs are a different story. In either case if the
bulb temp is reduced too low then the light output drops and, actually
of more concern, the color temp is lowered.
