Hi, I had lost so many fish because of the powerhead, and I just wonder if
anyone have any great suggestion on how to prevent this. I just lost a
six-line wrass tonite :( , so I hope that someone would help me to stop this
kind of tragedy to reoccur. I had used some plastic net to wrap the suction
opening before, but it kept get plugged up and it is such a hassle to clean.
Any response is greatly appreciate it.

Hello Thai!
The only solution I am familiar with is to use the sponge filter on the
inlet but this requires cleaning it once a week. (to avoid a nitrate
factory)

What powerhead do you use? How powerful is it?
Do you use regular intake strainer provided with the pump?
I can imagine loosing a slug or anemone in the powerhead,
but fish? Is there a chanse fish died and then get sucked
dead to the powerhead? Healthy fish is too smart IMHO to
get sucked to the pump secured with a regular strainer.

I am using two powerhead for my 55gallon reef tank right now. One is 402
and the other is 802. I think the 802 is probably too strong for my tank. I
guess one would never thought of this thing until someone pointed out to
you. I will have to replace one with another 402. Thank you so much for all
your responses.

Can you get ahold of the women's 'knee-high' stockings which are made of the
same stuff as pantyhose. Get a neutral color and use a rubber band to hold
this against the inlet. It should do very well and has the advantage of
being easily removeable and washable.

If I recall, I used a black heater guard that is for a Hagen heater I
think(not too sure on that anymore) but it is about 2.5" long and fit
perfectly on the bottom of the intake to the Hagen Powerheads. I have used
them on my 402 and 802. It isn't nearly as obvious as the hagen prefilters
that are meant for these powerheads. Those powerheads are big and ugly
enough as is.
I too lost a few fish to the 802 powerheads and then was recommended to pick
up these heater guards. I think the package was a bronze color with clear
plastic over it. You can see the heater guards inside. It might even be for
tronic heaters. I'm sorry I can't remember. If it comes back to me, I'll
post it here.
Regards,
Bill

I bought the 4 x 'quickfilter' attachment for my 3 402's, then cut 3 of them down to about 2" long (easy - just use a few spots of superglue after cutting to glue back on the screw-on part onto the bottom of the cut-off part - if you see what I mean!). Then just push these onto the PH's with no filter media inside. This has lots of slots for intake spread over a large area so no problems with fish getting sucked in or clogging up...

Hello,
Just buy the cleaning cartridge that they make for the 402, you dont
need to put the sponge in and if ever you need you can always put back
the sponge or carbon. It works great and is made to fit the power
head.

most powerheads come with a cone shaped plastic screen that can be attached
to the intake --just to prevent such things. If you don't have one, ask
your LFS, they usually have a box with a bunch of misc parts laying around
and can probably fix you up.
