I have tried two types of snails and two general starfish over about a
year in my fish only tank. All died in hours. None of the fish have
died quickly and all seem healthy. Any ideas?

many are very sensitive to acclimation. if not done very slowly ... Also
copper or other heavy metals in the water

Tell us what you are doing, tank info is good too, like salt mix, general
water param's, where is the water coming from? How do you introduce new
tank mates?

It's possible that these critters may not be dead ... several months ago, I
bought a brittle star and introduced it into my tank with care, only to be
shocked that it just froze and would not move. I thought it was dead, and
posted on this newsgroup ... Kim Gross suggested checking the salinity, and
I found that it was low because I had a fish only tank.

After adjusting iit slowly to normal levels and waiitng some more time my
brittle star became active and healthy again. This whole process took about
a month, so be patient.
