View Full Version : AGA overflow and return pump

90 gallon AGA drilled tank- I did not purchase the AGA overflow system but
ordered a Durso standpipe instead.
My question regards the return line.

The 1" overflow will give me 600 GPH into the sump, right?
Is this enough for a 90 gallon? I don't want to limit what I can keep in
this tank.
Is there any reason I cannot use the 3/4" return hole for a drain line as
well?
How much more GPH would that give me and will it work?

I never understood why they put the return line right next to the overflow-
seems it would function better if the return line entered the tank further
away from the drain?? If I used both the predrilled holes for overflow I
could route the return anywhere into the tank that I want it and get
(presumably) more thorough circulation??
(I will probably do a totally separate closed loop system later on, but am
just working on the initial system now.)

Also I intend to install one SCWD in my return, and don't know which
submersible pump I want- Mag 9.5 or Mag 12??
Is there a better choice?

(and if I am wrong or confused on any issue please correct me now!!)

You want your sump running around 3x - 4x total volume of the display tank.
Using the 3/4" return line will permit you to put a couple of "locline" outlets
pointed toward the other end of the tank. The water will naturally flow back to
the draining overflow box.

A Mag 12 will work fine with the SCWD, because the unit can handle up to
1400gph. Just remember that you'll lose 20% of the flow your Mag pump is
creating. That is quite a bit when you include the head pressure of pushing
water up 4'-5' high.

Better to have the SCWD on a closed loop, if possible, and a Mag 9.5 or 12 for
your sump's return pump.

That is what I have decided to do- better now in the design phase than six
months down the road facing a redo.
Thanks again for your patience.

Your planted tank is lovely, really especially nice. I look forward to
seeing what you do with a reef tank.

Gee... thanks!
I kinda wonder how it will turn out as well.

Research phase is winding down- not that it will ever be over, but the
actual ordering of items means I have made a decision or two. Products and
opinions change so frequently that committing to various brands is scary.

I'm pretty much hooked on Mag drives and Aqua C skimmers. I just picked up a
Remora Pro a couple of days ago, that I'll use someday. LOL
