View Full Version : Condylactis question...

November 22nd 03, 06:36 AM
Hi all...I recently came across "an offer I cant refuse" (as in free from
the LFS)as it were for a small condy. ,My question is this....whats the bare
minimum as far as lighting for this pretty lil fella?I hate putting it that
way,but Im just a poor country boy (recently got laid off) ..Ive been
pricing lights online and such and from what I can tell 200 is roughly the
best I can find for the PC set-up I read was "BEST" for them.....maybe marc
could throw a few ideas?Im currently running the standard OEM oceanic
fixture two-bulb (white 20,000k actinic 03)Im not sure of the watts.....I
know thats bad.but all I have is fish an rock so far...really looking to
take the tank further though

Hi Possum,

You can probably find some used PC lighting for sale (ebay, For Sale from club
message boards or Reef Central), or buy them new from HelloLights.com

You didn't state your tank size, but PCs can provide enough lighting if it
isn't too big a tank.

this stuff(technical issues) I just really enjoy caring for the life in My
tank an want to make sure I'm not compromising their health/safety due to My

I can totally relate to budget problems Possum. I have been researching
affordable Metal Halide lights and I found a DIY article that claims you can
do it for under $100.00
I dont have the link handy ATM but let me know if you're interested and I'll
dig it up for you.

On a 55g, you want quite a bit of lighting. 4x96 would be your best option, but
it won't cost a mere $200.

Of course, if you don't put that much light over your tank, you'll have to put
light-loving creatures along the top of the tank, and lower light creatures
lower in the rockwork.

Hey, Mort -- even if Possum doesn't want it, can you dig it up? I need to
find solutions that are as "cost effective" as possible for setting up a
tank... maybe I'll create a site... "How to Set up a Reef for 30 Altarian
Dollars a Day"... ;-)

What about a Fulham Workhorse 7 ballast ( $33.00 + S&H Hughes Supply) here's
the wiring diagram http://www.fulham.com/NewFiles/wire11.gif , 2 36" VHO URI
lamps 1 actinic and one 50/50 ($29.99 @ LFS), 4 waterproof end caps ( $4.50
each + S&H @ http://www.northcoastmarines.com/lighting.htm )

I have this setup on my 50 gal refugium mounted in pvc rain gutter lined
with foil tape to make it opaque.

This is my suggestion.
