Does anyone use washing soda for a buffer? And if so, where did you find
it? I can't find it anywhere.

You mean baking soda? Sodium Bicarbonate?

Washing soda is sodium carbonate, there is a difference. I have seen it for sale
in several places. The local grocery store has it. Home Depot, I think they had
it. Leslie's Pool supply carried it in several sizes, on the shelf.

I never tried it before but I do use the similar potassium carbonate as part of
the buffer in planted FW tanks. It is available from www.gregwatson.com, along
with other chemicals that are useful for the planted aquarium.

You can make your own. Pre-heat oven to 400 F, spread balking soda on aluminum foil in a
thin layer on a cookie sheet and then bake for 1 hr. Aquatronics also sells it called
'Buffex". You can also find it in the laundry section of a large food store, as Arm &
Hammer Washing Soda.
