NOt overly experienced with filters for ponds as I do not use therm,
but from what I have read a floating type media is generally used, as
a sand pack as used in a swimming pool requires a lot of pressure from
the pump. I fooled around with a Jaccuzi brnad pool filter and pump
for awhile to see if it would be workable without burning a lot of
power to filter the three burial vault tanks and 1200 gal stock tank I
have , but opted for lesser visibility in my water and went with flow
through from my pond instead. It worked and did a good job. I used a
plastic bead material that had a semi bouyancy to it and did not
settle down like sand. Once pressure was reduced from the pump it
would sort of float up and unpack, and allow backflushing without
needing higher pressure from the pump.
