View Full Version : Possible Mantis Shrimp ...

Today while I was staring into my tank, I saw what looked a heck of a lot
like a Mantis Shrimp. I have had some hermits and crabs torn up, but had
always thought these were the unlucky losers of some internal fighting ...
Anyone have any opinions on the traps mentioned at the following site:

>My initital exposure to Mantis Shrimp came at the Chicago Tropiquarium 30
years ago. Basically it was a case of 'you have skinny arms and little
hands, maybe you can catch that darned mantis shrimp. Being a kid who
couldn't eat shrimp (allergies) I certainly had no qualms about capturing
one...
On my left index finger, 30 years later, there is a scar that runs from the
center of the nail on an angle all the way down to the second joint
(knuckle) with a ridge down the nail where it doesn't grow properly because
the nail bed was split. The first knuckle is rather stiff and part of the
finger tip is numb.
What happened? I saw the 'shrimp' dive into a big opening in the coral rock.
I stuck my skinny hand in after him. He nailed the hell out of me. He was
only about 4" long! He didn't 'spear me', he hit me repeatedly with his
clubbing claw.
Not much too see nowadays: just a pale scar running halfway down my finger
and a nail that grows a bit funny.

I've heard stories about the mantis ... that's what worries me. What if I
have more than one? :(

You will need to stay up late and listen to a tell-tale noise. Most of the
time, mantis shrimp come out at night when light go out. Very cautious
critter. Do not make a mistake of a pistol shrimp.

The pistol shrimp sort of discharges once or twice--a sharp snapping sound.
"Clubbing" type mantis shrimp are only heard when beating the bejesus out of
something hard, like a snail or clam. The noises are short, sharp, and come
in rapid succession.
They make little to no noise when clobbering your hand or something else
soft and resilient.
It's a shame they're such a PITA in a tank as in actuality they are really
gorgeous animals in many cases, and apparently quite intelligent.
