View Full Version : DSB - new worms

As dr. Shimek wrote, DSB needs adding new worms after some time.
Is adding new live rock (how much?) enough to reintroduce new worms, or is
it a must to buy some truly "live sand" or worms alone?

Been thinking of adding a couple pounds of Garf grunge ... they claim this
revitalizes the DSB. Hoping someone in the group would share whether this is
a good idea or is just B.S.

You do not need to buy. But exchange a couple of cup full with other reefer
to introduce new worm and other critter.

Grunge is mostly very large chunks of rocks/corals and very little real
"sand".

yea JC but its filled with pods and worms. every time i have used it after
a few weeks the life in the tank realy gets a kick in the ass and takes off.
pods will be everywhere.
its well worth the addition to the tank, but it is a bit pricey. if i had
the free $$$ i'd have my entire substrate from it.

Rather than getting Grunge get some good live sand, or a true live sand
activator kit.
If there is a local reef club in your area see if you can swap some sand
with them, a few cups will make a lot of difference.

It's impossible - nobody have DSB near me (Poland)

there is no club and buiyng such kits is impossible in Poland
So, can you answer my question?

I would suggest then having your local fish store (lfs), or whoever you
get your supplies from order you some live sand. You don't need much,
what is best is if they can get you a small amount every few months with
thier regular orders.

There is no such possibility. There is no import of real "live sand" to
Poland, only live rock.
The only so-called live sand available in Poland have no worms inside, is
packed hermetic and have only bacteria (simply it's wet sand).

LR placed in a tank with sand = live sand in a few months.

While pods and worms are also desired, they arent the stuff that lives in
the sand (infauna) that makes livesand alive.

So, is worms from live rock enough for that?

Will live rock have all kinds of worms to make sand live enough?
Why there is need to periodically introduce new worms?

you add new to get diversity, you have a closed system with everything
compeating aginst the others in there, you are going to depelte the life
over time and it needs reboosting.

Let's say, my tank has 2 years and I need to add some new worms to increase
diversity.
Is it enough to add a new piece of live rock (how much?)?

While many people think that the live rock is enough to seed that sand bed, I
and many others do not. There are many worms and critters that inhabit sandbeds
that do not inhabit rocks. I think real live sand (not the crappy bagged wet
sand that is called live sand) needs to be added. After a tank has been set up
for "2 years" and needs to be "re-seeded" a peice of rock will not do it
IMHO.. especially the way much of the rock is brought in and left sitting dry
in boxes for days/weeks at the distributors or the -Doctors office- (heheh)
before they ship it to you.. When I used to bring live rock in , there would be
lots of worms and critters linning the bottom of the box, and the would all be
alive. now days when I see rock come to other reefers houses, the rock is
pretty dry and no life at all except for some macro algaes. Try to remember how
many critters yopu saw crawling around when you first opened the box of your
live rock..

I ordered a live sand activator from ipsf.com and I am very happy with it.
They also have worms and other helpers.
Each piece of coral that I got with my order from ipsf.com came with at
least one hitch-hicker coral.
Good luck
