See, I love that fish!! :) what an awesome looking guy.

I wonder how common they are? I can't say I've ever seen any in my neck
of the woods.

It's been some time since I've seen one myself. If you have a small LFS
rather than a chain, you may be able to request one. I like some of the big
fish as well, I have an 11in Oscar and my son has a small Fronty that we are
going to have to figure something out for (they get quite large too).
Good luck on your quest.

They are far too common IMO.
I regularly see them for sale and few purchasers realise just how big they
grow - over two feet long & deep & wide with it.
These fish should only be contemplated if you are prepared to provide the
6'x30'30 minimum tank that an adult wil need.

I saw one in my pet store for sale. It was probably about 45cm long.
I think they wanted $400 for him. They were also selling a "wild
caught" red oscar, for $450. I thought that was a bit of a rip off,
considering I saw one in another store, which was nearly full grown,
for $45. I prefer to raise them from babies though. Feel like you've
achieved something that way.

I was contemplating getting a giant gourami, but was turned off when I
realise they grew to 2 foot!!! I can handle oscar size, but 2 foot is
too much. They are a gorgeous fish though.

I would NEVER pay over $50 for a fish.. and I feel the same as you, I
would want to raise him/her from a little 2" shrimp to a 2' giant :)

The Giant Gouramis that are at the John G Shedd Aquarium (largest
public aquarium in Chicago, IL, USA for those that do not know), was so
large that there is no way they need to be in a fish tank.
A 7ft tank would be like a coffin for the ones they have at the Shedd.
Either there is more than one Gourami refered to as a "Giant Gourami"
or that fish will get much larger than 2 feet long.
I know NetMax visited the Shedd ( I think it was last yr sometimes) and
I wonder if he saw the Giant Gouramis I'm talking about.
They have this one that ramed the glass wall as I was trying to see
their enormous Clown loaches. OH MY GOODNESS did it scare the crap out
of me.
I have this silly high pitched out don't what to call it that comes out
of me when something spooks me like that. It was so funny.
That huge fish did it every time a person had their head close to the
glass. I'm sure it was a territorial display and I sure am glad that
glass was as thick as it was! = )~

The Shedd Giant gourami's only redeeming quality would be his personality,
if he had one, but all he does is stare at you. This fish is *not* a
looker. I could fill a thousand tanks with different fish before I would
give this puppy a 2nd look (but that is just me).
