ok I have a strange question has anyone ever had an aggresive goldfish??
I have a 3-4 inch fantail that has seemed to kill all of it's tank
mates. One night at a fair I decided that I wanted to try and win a gold
fish so lucky me I got the ping pong ball in the middle tank and won one
of the larger fantails not just a reguler goldfish. so I brought it
home. Later that night I went back and decided that the fish needed a
buddy and once again I won one of the bigger fish except this time I got
a Black Moor. While I was picking him out my boyfriend threw the rest of
the ping pong balls and won a smaller regular goldfish so now we had 3.
So I put them in the tank together and with in a few days the Black Moor
had pieces of fin missing and later died. Then a few weeks went by and
the other goldfish died with some missing fins as well. I've also gone
through 3 apple snails with this fish so now I'm afraid to put anything
with her cuz it seems that she kills off all tank mates. Just thought
this was strange aren't goldfish usually peacefull??

## They can be very aggressive at feeding time.

## How large is this tank you had them all in?
so I brought it

## What else is in the tank with them? What other types of fish? Gold fish
don't bite off other fishes fins.
Then a few weeks went by and

## Yes so you have something else going on in your tank.........

Congratulations on winning some fish! I'm surprised you can win them
at fairs.
I have a fan tail goldfish who is pretty big. He is about 6 inches
long. He doesn't seem like he would be aggressive, but sometimes he
can be. I had a snail in with him, and all he did was harrass the
thing. The snail hung in there for a long time, but eventually curled
up in his shell and never came out, and eventually died.
I also had my goldfish in with a small koi. After being together for a
while, the goldfish started chasing and pushing around the koi.
Because of the stress the goldfish was causing for the koi, the koi got
sick. I put a tank divider in for a while, and when I took it out they
seemed to get along better, but I removed the goldfish because I didn't
want to chance it.
I think if you have enough room in the tank, and have a few large
goldfish, that they would be find together. But I wouldn't suggest
putting big ones in with little ones. Other than that the only thing I
can think of is seperating the fish all together.

well there was nothing else in the tank but 3 goldfish and eventually
3 snails all which have died except the one goldfish. It is a 15
gallon tank.

I've just decided that for what ever reason she likes to be alone so
she's the only one in the tank now and I'm just not gonna try any other
fish with her. She seems happy enough by herself as long as the cat
dosen't bother her.

Yeah, some fish need to be on their own. Bonkers is on his own, and
he's with me at school, currently. He's happy there.
If your tank has enough algae in it you could think about putting a
plecostomus in it to clean up. Plecos are tough fish and shouldn't get
bothered by a goldfish. The Goldfish definately won't kill it!

I'm not convinced that the remaining goldfish is or was the cause of
death of the other tanks mates. It is more likely that they were
either ill when you brought them home or your tank may have some water
quality issues : (
BTW, A fifteen gallon tank is not large enough for three goldies and
three apple snails.

the water has always tested fine during the cycling I tested daily and
did water changes to keep down ammonia nitrites and such after it
finally stabalized is when all of this began to happen.I truly believe
the other fish died due to the harassment and fin loss from this one
fish. This happened about 4 months ago and the one remaining goldfish is
still alive and healthy so I would believe that she would have shown
some of the same signs as the other fish if it was water quality or
parasitic issues. I was thinking of getting a pleco for her because
algae can be a problem sometimes but, I would have to get one that only
gets about 4 inches or else i'll have a huge pleco and no where to
really keep him cuz my other tanks already have a pleco each.

Probably just a big coincidence and the other fish just have weaker immune
systems (either temporarily or permanently) and died off from overcrowding/
lack of cycling the tank/ stress from being moved (especially if the dead
fish had just come from a dealer), etc. Your "killer" goldfish probably just
has it better (i.e. is well acclimated to the container/tank maybe you
introduced the "killer" goldfish before the others and so it had more time
to acclimate) than the others and so had a stronger immune system than the
others (recent additions?). Good luck, do research on cycling fish
acclimation, etc., and later!

I've done research on cycling the tank I had a problem with my 55 when
it was new and I didn't know about cycling but I do now and I've gained
many more tanks and fish in a short period of time I've lost none with
the exception of 3 guppies that were housed with the goldie(temporarily)
and they all died with in a week of coming home and all were torn up now
I then removed the goldfish to another tank and NONE have died since
they have even had babies (not too hard with guppies) I really believe
it was the goldie that killed them all not disease I find it hard to
believe that all of the fish and snails that have died in there with her
died from disease and she is just fine If they did die from disease then
I'm sure she would have signs of something or other by now. The fish
weren't even sick or anything before I would find them dead they were
fine one day and dead the next.

What were the ammonia and nitrite levels when the fish died? High levels of
those I have found in my experience cause death without signs/symptoms. Good
luck and later!
