As the subject says I have ich. I have a comunity tank that I have set
up. it was an established tank moved it to my place. and had a nitrite
spike that I noticd after i bought 2 clown loaches and my test kit. I
know bad Idea test kit first. But I am a newbie. Also when I fist got
the aquarium I bouught 3 glowlight tetras. probably what caused the
nitrite spike. Anyway one week late I now noticed some white spots on my
western rainbow, and one of my glowlights is being lazy as well as my
loaches whom have been lazy for 3 days now, although one is now more
active with the nitrites at 0. I also have a somewhat planted tank. So
my quesiton is what do I do?
If i get no responce to my question by the time i check in the mornig I
will go to my LFS and ask them. I don't want any of my buddies to pass
on me.
TIA

First crank up the temperature to about 84F. that will stop the ich
from multiplying. If you can keep it there the Ich should burn out.
Lots of good info at: http://faq.thekrib.com/disease-fw.html

That isn't entirely correct. Raising the temperature of the water will
speed up the life cycle of the ich not kill it off - most docs I've read
suggest up to 90F but not all fish tolerate this. You will need to treat
as well to kill the ich when it is free swimming in the water. Another
good doc is:-

Hope this helps

For the Ich outbreak we experienced a few months back, we treated with
aquarium salt and a half dose of coppersafe. Half dose because some
fish like the Clown Loaches might don't tolerate copper or other
chemicals very well. After some further research, I discovered that
the way copper dealt with the parasite, was by poisoning it. The
mechanism involved suffocation. The research also revealed that the
copper was toxic to just about every other living thing in my tank as
well. It was just that the parasites were more susceptible to the
effects. So I'm not using copper any more, because you really need to
use a lot of care if you go down that route. It worked, but you need
to use care.

For my latest, mild outbreak I used raised temps and a formaldehyde
based cure (all that is available in the UK) - worked a treat but I did
need to dose 3 times rather than the two recommended on the bottle

Thank you all for you reponses, I went to my LFS the guy there sold me
"super velvet plus", because I do have scaleless fish and plants. It
contains Acriflaven and NaCl. it turned my water a bluish green.

The "velvet" treatment in the UK is much the same as the Ich treatment
that we purchase with an active ingredient of formaldehyde - in fact
"Protozin" claims to treat both....with scaleless fish such as Clowns I
usually give half the dose....

Protazin by Waterlife. Never fails, don't worry about salt. Raising the temp
just speeds up the ich lifecycle a bit. Use a 3/4 dose with the clowns in
the tank.

my advice....find some ich away(wal-mart) raise your temp between 82-86' watch for the ich to fall off your fish and clean your tank. vaccumn your gravel and that should take care of your problem. good luck:)
