I needed to catch a pair of rainbow cichlids from a tank containing other
rainbows and I decided it would be easiest to do this by separating them
from the others with a divider. I hope this will be useful and descriptive
enough to figure out what I did.
I cut a piece of egg-crate material slightly narrower than the interior
dimension of the tank, and tied some pieces of airline tubing to both sides
of the egg-crate to create a friction fit.
I then formed a "U" shape with a piece of plastic canvas wider than the tank
and placed it next to the egg-crate on the same side as the pair, with the
bottom of the "U" next to the egg. This made it very difficult for the fish
to escape at the edges of the divider and kept them from getting to the hard
edges where they might be injured.
This divider is relatively substantial and easily removed.
Egg-crate refers to the plastic grids that one way to diffuse light from
recessed lights in a suspended ceiling. I usually find them in home centers
near the various parts of suspended ceilings. The plastic canvas is usually
carried in craft stores in the needlepoint section. I have found sheets in
sizes up to 11"X17". I'm sure I picked up the idea of the crate divider
elsewhere but the addition of the plastic canvas was my own - I think
