I am new to this coral tank stuff and with my Birthday around the corner the
wife was asking me what I want. I told her that i'd like some book(s) that I
can use as a reference for my new hobby, so I would like some input into
some books to look into that introduce the setting up, maintaining and
growing of a coral tank, and also other things about coral types and what
fish go well with them, what not to do, deseases, filtration, water cycles,
lighting and rest that I don't know of yet.. I am learing as I go, but need
a book on hand as a bible type reference (with lots of pictures). I'd like
something recent and if there is a difference in the region of the world for
this stuff then something that is in reference with Australian coral tanks.

Use the net, it's free. Books just collect dust and get outdated.
Many idiots have asked the same questions that you might already have...
search google for your question and you will probably find "King Marc"
answering the question quite accurately. Marc doesn't have a life so,
reefing is what he is good at... listen to 99% of what he has to offer.

Andrew,
I have a number of "reef book" recommendation on my site here;
http://home.comcast.net/%7E76fxe/literature.htm
I hope you find some of that helpfull.
"Natural Reef Aquariums" is a very good comprehensive "beginners" book.
"Aquarium Corals" by Eric Borneman is the best "coral care" hobbyist
book available.
For a really good series, (aka coral reefers "bible") - check out the
"MCRA" (Modern Coral Reef Aquariu,) series (Vol's 1 - 4) by Fossa & Nilsen.
Hope this helps,
Teri

Teri: Since you only list the books you have read on your website and you don't
list The Reef Aquarium books by Delbeek and Sprung, how can you say Eric's book
is "the best available"? ;-)
Perhaps it would be accurate to say it's the best book you've READ. ;-)

Hello JCB,
I think it is fair to say that you learn something from every book you
read. Your books were the first books I bought and read when I started
marines. They are brilliant, and you can feel very proud of your
achievements. They were very "hard going" for a complete novice to
marines, but are an invaluable reference now.

Hello JCB,
I did not wish to sound patronising, and I hope it did not come across
like that. Be nice to Teri, she has sent posted some pleasant comments
in the past !! LOL

TRA vol 1 is still one of my favorites. I like the analogy between
stereos/power/volume and lighting/nutrients/algae.
