Noisy pump/filter

I have this Aquaclear 20-30 gallon pump. It makes a fairly loud (And
annoying) whirrr sound. Is this normal for these pumps or should I look at
something in particular causing the noise. I have been to a couple of stores
lately and thier tanks seem to be silent. If they were making the noise this
one is, a combined noise, the clerks wouldnt be able to stand it, I dont
think. The pump was used when I got it.

Is the pet store using the same one you have? There's might be super
way better quality than yours.

I recently tried to fix my old aerator pump as it made noise but wasn't
pumping air. I fixed it so it pumped air again, but subsequently it
was SOOO ANNOYINGLY LOUD!!! I ended up dumping it. But anyway, the
thing inside mine that was making the noise was the magnets hitting the
side of the motor as they vibrated back and forward. This could be
what's happening to yours.

I also noticed with mine, that it made more noise when I put more
resistance on the end of it - like it was very noisy when I attached
the bubble curtain, but when I used a sponge filter it was bearable.

What do you mean by pump? Are you talking about a powerhead or a
filter? Can you get to the impeller and clean it? Often a good
cleaning will stop the rattle. Some Aquaclear filters have replaceable
impellers, which can also help if cleaning doesn't.
