I want to purchase a protein skimmer but somewhat being a newbie to the
Marine land I am not sure. One of the LFS has a ETSS hangon with pump for
245 that I am leaning towards.
It is for a 55gal
45 pounds of live sand
80 pounds of live rock
1 emperor 400
1 fluval 404 I am thinking of removing
2 Powerhead's 646
Because the tank has only been up for 9 weeks I only have 3 blue leg hermits
in it right now. I do not plan on doing corals until I am sure I can make
this switch from freshwater to salwater successfully and so far it seems to
be doing well. I used on jumbo shrimp to help cycle it at the 4 week mark.

From water test which are great right now I want to add a few fish put I
want the protein skimmer to be running before i introduce them.

Any recommendations would be great.

Aqua C or the Eura Reef. Best around, good price.

Huh? ETSS do not make hangon skimmers.

AquaC will do fine. ETSS Reef Devil is good for this size tank as well. But
it is best first determine what kind of livestock/coral you wish to keep.

And the Emperor 400 as well.

It may not be an actuall ETS, but made by the folks at AEtech (same people that
make ETS)and its on their web site. Its called the sea dragon

This is the one it has a ETSS sticker on it so I did not know any better :)
So would this be a good one for my tank, also on a previous post someone
mentioned getting rid of the Emperor 400 and the fluval 404 if I put this
one? What is the idea behind it the tank cycled well with both of these so I
figured if I get rid of the fluval 404 and replace it with this skimmer I
would be fine is this to much filrtation or something am I actually hurting
the tank?

My bad. It must be a recent product as ETSS havent had HOT for a long time.

ETSS rates it for 100g system. But I myself wont trust those ratings as this
skimmer also isnt their well known downdraft skimmer. IMHO there doesnt
exist a HOT skimmer that can handle more then 75G yet. So take the specs and
a grain of salt.

Freshwater filtration setup can only filter ammo/nitrite and not nitrate and
nitrate can be a major coral killer. A skimmer extually exports waste out of
the system. The working pratices of biological filtration is quite different
then the common pratices that of freshwater.

I would highly recommend you get your hands on some recently published reef
books if you havent already.

Jimmy,
Lifereef makes a hang on version of their VS24 skimmer. It can definitely
handle more than 75 G! I use the in-sump version (same size) and it is an
excellent skimmer.

$245.00.. sounds like an LFS ripoff.

For a 55 hob skimmer here are your best 3 choices.

About $100. Excalibur Hang on Skimmer.

About $125. CPR Bak Pak

About $170. Aqua C Remora

I'd recommend the Remora if you have the cash. All of these prices
are mail order. Prices will be about 50% higher at LFS.

Good luck
