i wanted to know if anyone had any ideas ( major cons) for putting a
20g. sal****er tank in my office in the house where my wife and i
smoke. i can imagine it isnt good for the water quality but any
comments would be appreciated. Mirek

I've had fish-only marine tanks since 1976. Quit smoking in 1989. The only
adverse effect I noticed of smoking on my tanks was on air pumps. The flapper
valves and filters would gum up and have to be replaced fairly frequently.
I don't know what effect smoking might have on reef animals.

If you run carbon it should take out any of the pollutants from the tank.
The carbon wont help your foolish habit from destroying your lungs though,
but perhaps your fish will outlive you...

No , not really. Evangelizing doesnt save anything,it certainly doesnt save
souls, and busting on people smoking might save someone from a horrible
lengthy death from emphysema like some of my granparents who took an entire
year to die , wasting away in a hospital.
Besides, as a resident of California, it is my solemn duty to impress upon
the rest of the backward world how eliminating smoking in all public places
makes the world so much better a place.
And why are you commenting anyway, if anything your comment should be , "
how in the world can you smoke and keep exotic fish anyway".

This is an international newsgroup... smoking is still considered the
'norm' in many countries and cultures outside of the US. If anyone
chooses to smoke in their own home then who the hell are you to preach
otherwise... So, as technically correct as you undoubtedly are, we don't
want need or want to hear your option on the personal health effects of
smoking in a reefs newsgroup. It's the rest of the world's solemn duty
to impress upon you as a US resident how eliminating your massive
pollution (as your country is world's largest emitter of greenhouse
gases) and signing up to Kyoto will make the world a much better
place!...and at least that is reef related !!!
You Californian residents can keep your keep you advise to yourself and
smoke it....
Jeez... People in glass houses...

Most people don't live in a home by themselves. Smokers
don't just smoke in their homes only. Other people have to
breath in the smoke from smokers. Anyone that smokes,
forces other people to breath in tobaco smoke. There is
not one smoker that does not force other people to breath
in his smoke.

My last post on the subject... The poster (not me) who asked the
question said both him and his wife smoke in the house, so what the hell
is your problem... we don't need a feckin' morality lecture on smoking.
On the subject of breathing other people's pollution... what about the
rubbish the we have to breathe here in Europe (and especially the UK)
that you US folks send us over on the jetstream every day !
BTW... I'm not even a smoker !

yeah i agree - you preacher people should all go and live in a horrible
intolerant cave somewhere. There are far far more important things to worry
about than smoking. Put your effort into something worthwhile please.

Im me and I can say whatever the hell I want wherever the hell I want
because I dont live in one of those backwards smoke filled places where
people tell you what you can and can not say.
I dont need a reason I dont need an excuse. The fact I happen to be right is
irrelevant.

<looks confused> Huh?
Left Hand - is telling others what to do in their own homes....
Right Hand - is saying to others, I don't live in a place that tells
others what to do...

Thanks for the response. i can see more of you are interested in the
smoking and freedom of speech. That's OK too. Yes smoking in public
places affects other people ( so i try not to smoke when im walking
outside ) and yes I agree it's time to stop smoking ( I am a Cardiac
Anesthesia Paramedic from UPenn) . And at the same time your opinion
is yours and it is an opinion so you shouldn't force it on anyone. Back
to the real reason I joined this group, SW fish. lol...So the smoking
dosent really affect the fish as i was kinda suspecting. I figured
there were some people who smoke in their house and share our hobby. We
don't obsessively smoke there but ( like mentioned above) going out
side to smoke where we have a lot of people just makes me feel like I'm
promoting the smoking. Which I strongly oppose. Other than mabe some
extra carbon to eliminate any odor and color there seems to not be much
that can happen. Right....? Comment please...Mirek
Thanks for all posts.

It probably won't hurt the fish any more than it hurts
you. :-)
At least in the water, there is bialogical filtration that
helps break down toxins. And it would stand to reason that
carbon would probably help remove some of it from the water.
If you had a reef tank for many years and smoked redily in
the room, and then one day you stopped smoking, you would
probably notice some improvement in the quality of the
reef tank.

It's like asking "If I smoke in my house, will my house
dog get asma?"
